what does a mucus plug look like?
Oct 28, 2011 at 10:15 PM
have any of y'all ever coughed up a mucus plug? if so, what did it look like? did it have blood in it? i coughed up a huge ol' loogie tonight (and i rarely EVER cough up mucus, it always just moves around in my lungs!) and it had a few strains of blood in it. My xrays a few days ago said i had a few mucus plugs. I freaked out over this loogie cuz of the little bit of blood, mom said that just means it's a mucus plug. i wanna ask y'all cuz i'm scare to tell my docs about it with the fear that they would put me back in the hospital even though they just sent me home with home IV meds today.
mine are usually hard and dark time i thought i coughed up one but it turns out it was a was huge!

Ha, you and your sister are like me! She coughs up all the time, I rarely do! It just moves! Thanks for asking this, I've wondered about that for a while, but never asked. And since I can't see, now if someone describes it to me like that, I'll know not to worry.

I sometimes cough up a little bit of blood mixed with mucus after a hard workout. My CF doc told me that it is pretty common in adult CFers. The rule at our center is ER if it's more than 1/2 a cup. Caitlin's right, it has to do with little vessels breaking and it can happen anytime. In itself, it doesn't mean means you have CF...which you already know! But you have to be on the look out for other symptoms of infection. You could see a little more blood in the next few days and old blood (usually brownish) but as long as it's no too much and you don't have other symptoms it's probably nothing to worry about.

The way I always try to see if you coughed it's no longer in your lungs – which is a VERY GOOD THING! May mean your IVs are working :-)

a little blood is normal. plugs are usually shaped castes of the little airways, usually in a tube shape or the shape of a Y. theyre pretty gross.. yet interesting, and harder than regular mucus.... but to cough up mucus with a bit of blood is normal, sometimes our little tiny vessels in the little airsacs break and cause blood.. sometimes its just streaks, sometimes you can cough up a straight up mouthful of pure blood, or clot-like substances... THAT is pretty creepy but as long as you dont cough up more than a cup (I think thats the safe amount) than youre okay... once you surpass that though, it means something is continuously bleeding and you need to go to the ER. Those are the rules I live by. And I just stained a pillowcase coughing up blood the other night, it sucked.. luckily, there is SHOUT stain remover. :o) dont worry though, a tiny bit of blood isnt bad and its awesome you got some junk up!
